Opinion / Editorial - The White House' slow response to the Katrina disaster can be attributed to one factor: the overwhelming Blackness of its victims and the overwhelming Whiteness of President Bush.

Indifference to our suffering is a fact of life, sadly moments like these simply illustrate it on a stage far larger than usual.

He will react with force designed to "keep these uppitty Negroes in their place" ( as if the storm hasn't punished them enough! ) because they dared become "uppitty" not only out of abject lack but also because of their death march toward wealthy, White sections of town.

This could be Any City USA with a large Black population and a Black mayor whose are being ignored because, well, he's just a figurehead. That is not meant to demean Black elected officials but I refuse to believe this official's wishes are being heeded by the alphabet soup deployed to what's left of his city.

Black people labor under a weighty presumption of inherent wrong that Samson himself couldn't bench press.

If we're starving, dehydrated and filthy and have the audacity to seek relief like our White counterparts when times get tough, then the song " Shoot 'Em On Sight!" is sung loudly or to quote Mississippi's governor, "Ruthlessly".

Society likes to kid itself and declare that the plantation and Jim Crow are dead and buried.

The occupation of New Orleans and other ravaged areas where the natives get restless speak blunt volumes to the contrary.

President Bush would rather the Negroes simply shut up, drop dead and quit complaining like they are human beings, let alone citizens.

There will be those self-appointed annointed in the Black community whose right wing apeing of reactionary doctrine will support whatever extreme measures the White House deems fit to master this situation.

Grassroots Black conservatives are denouncing the double standard and rallying aid to victims, who are themselves majority African-American.

I especially commend commentary on the yahoogroup, Black_Conservative. While they agree that we as a community need to combat certain trends, they also speak up for the voiceless in storm-destroyed areas.

A tactical question has been posed on the air waves and is worth mention here: " How can America maintain costly garrison duty in Iraq and wage a domestic Marshall Plan in the deep South?"

Indifference to Black suffering on this scale can fan the flames of local discontent and aid the cause of enemies overseas.

As usual, the nation's moral standing and its very being rest upon how it treats the children of its past slaves.
